Recording & Music Production Class – FAQs
Who is this class for?
This class is designed for beginners ages 14 and up who want to learn the basic fundamentals of recording and music production. No prior recording experience is required.
Who is teaching the class?
The class is taught by Garland Crosby, Recording Specialist, who will guide students through the fundamentals of recording and music production in an approachable, beginner-friendly environment.
Garland has over 10 years of experience using Digital Audio Workstations and enjoys a position as his church's lead audio engineer. He graduated from Towson University with a bachelor's in Electronic Media and Film with a concentration in Audio and Radio. While Audio engineering is his specialty, Garland has done live sound work, film audio recording, podcast recording and mixing, film scoring, and produced documentaries for an automotive media company.
When is the class?
The class meets on September 12, 19, and 26, and October 3, from 2:00–4:00 PM.
Where is the class held?
Classes are held in the Group Lesson Room inside Bill's Music, located at 743 Frederick Road, Catonsville, MD 21228.
How much does the class cost?
There is a $75 per student non-refundable cost for the four-class session.
Do I need to bring my own recording equipment?
A laptop and headphones are preferred but not required. Students may also bring a notebook and pen for taking notes. Garland will provide equipment for hands-on demonstrations and will have a computer available for students to use. The class focuses on learning the fundamentals and understanding the tools and concepts used in music production. Garland will also discuss budget-friendly gear and workspace recommendations.
What will I learn?

- Keyboard shortcuts and working efficiently in a DAW
- Virtual instruments, synthesizers, sounds, and presets
- Basic effects like EQ, reverb, delay, and compression
- Saving and organizing different versions of your projects
- Basic mixing fundamentals
- Creating space and clarity in a mix
- How to experiment creatively without getting overwhelmed
What is a DAW?
A DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is software used to record, edit, arrange, and produce music. The class will introduce students to the basic concepts and workflow involved in working with a DAW.
Do I need to know how to play an instrument?
No. You do not need to be an experienced musician or instrumentalist to participate. The class is focused on learning the fundamentals of recording and production.
Will we learn advanced recording and mixing techniques?
The focus of this particular course is on fundamentals. The goal is to build a strong foundation before diving into advanced techniques, so students can develop confidence and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
What is the biggest takeaway from the class?
The goal isn't perfection—it's to finish songs, experiment, learn from each project, and enjoy the creative process.
