The Alto saxophone is a Eb transposing instrument. This means when you play a written "C" on the instrument, it sounds as an E flat on a concert piano. Consequently, the alto sax sounds a major sixth lower than written.
Transposing keys ensures all saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone) share the exact same fingering system. For example, the fingerings you learn for a written C, D, and E on an alto saxophone are exactly the same on a tenor saxophone, even though the tenor will sound a different pitch. This makes it much easier to switch between different saxophone sizes without having to learn entirely new fingerings.
